Saint Martin’s Church

It is difficult to retrieve the exact construction date and place of a church in Asse. Christianization occurred in this area in the 6th to 7th centuries. This period was characterized by the erection of mother parishes, to which Asse presumably belonged. The construction of a prayer house has to be seen within this framework. Opinions differ with regard to the date and place of erection. Some sources claim that the church was built in the 7th century; others assume it took place in the 11th century.

As a result of numerous wars, the church was demolished several times and subsequently repaired, rebuilt and enlarged. This happened according to the governing spirit of the times. This explains the presence of Roman, Early Gothic and High Gothic elements in the church. Nevertheless, the construction material – Iedean sandstone - remained the same.

The Romanesque architectural style is reflected in the transept; the square basement of the tower is in a typical Romanesque style. The crucifix-shaped chapel, the choir and the south portal were added in the 15th century and exclusively contain Gothic elements.

The floor plan is in the shape of a Latin crucifix, which means that the nave is longer than the choir and that they are separated from each other by a transept.

The style of the nave is typically Gothic, with pointed arch windows. The High Gothic choir features three bays and a pentagonal apse. The High Gothic south portal is a rarity in Western Brabant. It does not run symmetrical to the church but is a continuation of Church Street.

It is worthwhile to take a closer look at this rural church in Brabantine High Gothic style.
